Session export: CSP - Caperion Tour: The Venenum Excursion

“`With growing instability in the local sectors, the Empire has received increased requests for aid from their stellar neighbors. In the wake of Imperial involvement with the pirate syndicate known as the Cordin Sycthe, local governments are requesting Imperial aid in establishing defense systems. This has left the Imperial Navy stretched far and wide and in the resulting gaps, there has been an increase in curious activity around the Caperion System.

The Emperor and the Vizier, along with Imperial Fleet Command, have requested your assistance in clearing up some of the backlog of requests throughout our home system. These requests have been prioritized by the Vizier.

Your first assignment is on Venenum, the Second Planet in the Caperion System. The Empire’s Elite Praetorian Guard make this dangerous world their training ground. Falling outside of the scope of the Imperial military, the Praetorian Guard operate nearly autonomously. However, cooperation between this unit and the Imperial Military is standard protocol. The Praetorian Guard does a routine check-in and logistics and supply demand on a weekly basis. This check-in is three days overdue. They had previously stated issues with the communication array located in their outpost.

The Praetorian Guard operate out of a secret facility known only as SITE 921, located somewhere in the northern hemisphere of the planet. It is a modest outpost, with spartan accommodations. You are to transit to Venenum, locate SITE 921, and re-establish communications link to SITE 921. Once this has been completed, you are to inspect the facility and ensure that it meets Imperial standards.

Caution. Venenum is a hazardous world. It has extreme shifts in temperature, acidic rain, and a litany of venomous fauna. Prepare yourself accordingly.

The ISN Geist, a Raider-II class Corvette, has been made available for your use on this mission. A company of Stormtroopers can be provided, should circumstances merit their use.”`

“`You have arrived at the New Ohmen Spaceport in the new Metropolis of Azatra. It was but a short flight from the Monolith to this port. You are unsure why you did not depart directly from the Monolith. Thran Occasus-Palpatine, the patron of this excursion, must have left that detail out of his briefing. No matter, you step forward into the light.

It is a bustling port. Cargo crates held aloft on repulsor trams move in all directions. There is a hum in the air, frequent beeps of droids as they catalog incoming shipments. The call of gulls hangs on the air, behind the cacophony of loading and unloading transports. The scent of the sea mixed with oil and other mechanical fluids fills your nose.

The people are numerous and varied in their origins. The population appears mostly human, but other species are sprinkled throughout the crowd. A mouse droid zips past your feet, letting out a series of beeps and squeals as it passes by. You turn your attention to platform 2A.

Before you is the ISN Geist. It is a sleek looking craft. Its delta shaped hull makes it resemble a miniature Star Destroyer. Soldiers inspect and direct cargo towards the craft. The small guard hut is not much more than a duracrete box with windows. Your team was instructed to assemble at the guard’s post. What would you like to do?”`

There are two Stormtroopers standing at the gate/post leading into the landing platform where the Geist is. They are hard to miss. One has an orange pauldron. They carry standard issue F-11 Blasters.

There is a portly human male in black Imperial uniform. He appears to be the portmaster. He's reviewing a datapad and issuing instructions to a handful of droids.

There are several Imperial Pilots lingering about. They appear to be off duty.

There is a gold Protocol droid that looks quite lost.

Rohan Lap’lamiz, the middle son and third older of the Emperor’s children, arrived via a non-descript imperial transport. As he disembarked his new SCAR stormtrooper armor sparkles in the sunlight. The only unique mark was the emerald green shoulder pauldron with the crest of Scholae Palatinae in black leather embossed on it.

Rohan scanned the busy spaceport, his eyes lingered momentarily on a stranger but continued on after a moment.

He was here at his father’s behest and his own desires to help the people of the Caperion system. While he wasn’t part of the offical trooper program he had always been fasciated with their armor since he had been a boy and, given the mission brief, knew he needed some protection beyond his usual robes.

Taking note of the officer with the datapad he assumed he was to check in before boarding. He approached smartly, but clearly non-military to the discerning eye. “My orders,” Rohan said, offering a datachip with the assignment to the officer.

“New here? What’s your designation trooper?” the rotund man asks, lowering his datapad.

“Yes, it’s RL-831. Orders to board this corvette,” Rohan said, providing his clan security clearance in addition to the datachip.

The black clad figure strode purposefully towards the Geist barely slowing as they reached the ramp. A slight hiss emitted from their helmet as they spoke. “Designation: Child, get out of the way.”

“Riiiight, and I’m the Emperor…Go through the checkpoint if you have the orders. Those are real Stormtroopers over there, so maybe rehearse it a few times before you try it on them.” He turns back to his datapad.

“Halt. Authorization code?” One of the Stormtroopers says at the gate. They step from the small guard post and block the entrance.

Rohan tilted his head in an annoyingly similar move as his father as he collected the datachip and security badge and queued up for the stormtroopers who were about to have their hands full.

As Rohan turns away, the Port officer hold his hand to his ear. He's clearly sending come kind of alert.

“Authorization: Osseus, Titius” the figure held out his ID chip. “Now, unless you want that helmet to meet my knee, scan quick and stand aside. Knowing you incompetents, my anti-toxins will be spilt on the floor of the hold by now.” The ichor in their voice was palpable.

“Standard Protocol, Sir. No Exceptions.” The Senior trooper replies.

The Stormtroopers inspect the ID Chip, then Titius and wave Titius along

“Cleared. Move along. Move along” He says.

Titius snatched the chip back and stalked up the gangplank.

Rohan stepped up and offered his datachip order and security clearance.

“Remove your helmet, Trooper.” The Sergeant says as the other soldier walks around the back of Rohan, slightly raising his blaster

Rohan sighed. “Is that necessary? All the security clearance is right there,” Rohan said, gesturing towards the datachip.

“Compliance is mandatory.” he says.

“Fine,” Rohan said, taking off his helmet. His blonde hair parted left to right with the sides buzzed short. Amazingly it was tidy still even after being in the helmet.

Rohan didn’t say anything but his face was screaming profanities at the unnecessary measure.

The soldier inspects the ID, looks at Rohan, then back at the ID.

“Move along.” He says, as if he wants to say something more, but his better judgement has stayed his tongue.

Rohan put his helmet back on and collected his stuff. Without further acknowledgment he proceeded onto the ship.

Ellac glared up at the Geist as he strode toward the guard post with the metallic footsteps of his HK series droid in tow behind him.

“Reporting to the Giest, on orders from the Vizier,” Ellac said, lowering his gaze on the heavy set Officer with the datapad.

“Goddamnit, can’t you see I’m busy here? Do I have a sign on me that says ‘Tell me your life story?’. Check in at the gate.” He glances up from his datapad, then points towards the checkpoint.

“Query: Master, shall I remove his head now, or would you like me to wait until there are less witnesses?” The HK unit said, stepping up from behind the Sith defensively.

Ellac stuck his hand out to deter the droid, nodding toward the aforementioned gate that led up into the Corvette. “Leave him,” he said curtly, starting off towards the two troopers ahead without another glance back.

“Halt. Credentials.” The stormtrooper says

Ellac’s glare tightened on the trooper before handing over his datapad. “This is all I’ve got.”

He inspects the datapad. Looks Ellac over. Then waives him through.

Retrieving his datapad, the pair make their way up the ramp and into the ship.

Fiddling with the chance cube in her hand, Elaine approached the port officer and held out her datapad for him to take.

“You have got to be kidding me.” He sighs and points to the checkpoint with the waiting Stormtroopers

“Thanks.” She retrieved her datapad. Still fiddling with her chance cube, she makes her way towards the checkpoint.

“Halt. Credentials?” The lead trooper says, holding out his hand.

“Ah, yes, of course.” she pulls out her Clan credentials and hands them over. “Here they are.”

He inspects it. Then inspects Elaine, before handing back the pad

“Cleared. Move along.” He waives Elaine through

Elaine gives the trooper a nod after retrieving her clan credentials then proceeds through the checkpoint.

“`You all make your way aboard the Giest. You are sheparded to a ready room. It appears that the rest of the ship has restricted access. It’s a small room, there are no berths, just a plain table with a holographic projector in the center. The walls a stone grey, with vertical cutouts in the wall. Diffuse white light fills the room.

Rayne and Reiden are seated waiting for you. You sit at the table with them. You go to speak but just then the holographic projector whirrs to life.

A young imperial officer appears.”`

“Good afternoon. I am Lieutenant Skye, commander of the Giest. We have been briefed in your mission and will be transporting you to Venenum post haste. We will remain on station to assist you where we can, however local conditions prevent us from remaining PlanetSide for the duration of your sortie. Should need arise, send word to the Geist and we shall assist in whatever capacity that we can. The flight to Venenum is short, so I am afraid your access to the vessel is restricted. Perhaps another time I can give you the full tour. Any questions before we depart?” She says

“Good to see you, Lieutenant Skye, and congratulations!” Rayne addressed the woman. She recognized her from their previous mission to Crannix. She was someone Rayne could trust to get the job done.

“Likewise, and thank you, Lady Rayne.” She replies with a slight nod

“Lieutenant, has the situation on the ground changed since our initial brief,” Rohan asked.

“Negative, communications have yet to be restored. Intense seasonal storms prevent any measure of useful orbital Intel. You’re going in blind. In fact, Due to the storms, we’ll have to set down at Site 3373. Locals have taken to calling the spaceport Cad’s Cove. A…quaint…settlement. You’ll need to overland the rest of the way to Site 921. I’d implore you to seek local assistance.” She replies.

“Do we have friendly forces in the area already we can engage?” Rohan asked.

“Once you reach Site 921, I am certain the Praetorian Regiment will offer you all the assistance you need. Likewise, The Giest will happily offer her compliment of Marines, should their services be required. There is also a small garrison in Cad’s Cove. Not more than 20 or 30 men, army regulars, mind you. Not Stormtroopers.” She says.

“Thank you. One final question. What does your gut tell you is happening down there and that we’re going to be walking into?”

“Venenum is a dangerous world, Mister Lap'lamiz. If you’re fortunate, it’s just the weather and faulty equipment. Nevertheless, mind yourself and prepare for anything. And… don’t touch the flowers.” She replies.

“Thank you, Lieutenant,” Rohan said, as he shifted out of the way for others to observe the holoprojector and ask any questions they had.

“Deadly plants and acidic rain aside,” Ellac said from the back of the room. “Are there any local threats from the indigenous parties that we should know about?”

Hearing the familiar voice, Elaine scowls at Ellac then quickly refocuses on the holographic image on the table in front of her.

“Negative. Local personnel are all on Imperial contract or Enlisted. Well paid and full bellies. All threats we are aware of are strictly… environmental.” She replies.

Ellac nodded as he felt a pair of eyes flick towards him and then away again. He had felt his sister’s presence when she had reported to the hangar, but up until now had been ignoring her, and everyone else in the room for that matter.

Sizing up the other members of his party, Ellac frowned when his eye fell on the boy in Stormtrooper armor. “You’re going to get eaten alive,” he whispered under his breath at Rohan.

Rohan turned to Ellac. “How does that feel? Looks like you left the better part of yourself in a Rancor,” he said.

Ellac smirked at the jab back. “Just like your father,” He said, turning his gaze ahead toward the holotable. “You should know I still owe him… An eye for an eye, and all…”

Rohan rolled his inside his helmet. Yet another person his Father had ‘wronged’ and now were out for revenge. If this person was hellbent on trying to avenge himself upon the Emperor he was probably going to be dead in no time at all.

“Ew, smells like Sith in here.” Titius snarked from the corner, the slur elongated by his helmet. “What have you come to lose this time?”

Reiden had sat there with Rayne as the others boarded. Though appearing relaxed, he’d paid close attention to the lieutenant’s words, taking it all in. Slowly, his posture changed, sitting more upright, eyes flicking from one member of their party to the next. He knew Rayne; she was reliable and capable. They’d been on enough missions before or he’d otherwise heard about her exploits. The rest were mostly unknown to him. Of course, he’d heard about them, but never had the opportunity to work alongside them. Turns out he’d get the chance now. His gaze settled on the one in stormtrooper armor. He wasn’t quite sure what to make of the Emperor’s son being involved in such a mission, let alone wearing that armor. He knew of the boy, but his young age was possibly something to be wary of. As long as it didn’t cost them the mission, that’s all that mattered to him.

The bickering, however, was another story. Not unfamiliar with friendly, or even not-so-friendly, jabs being taken, this was somehow more grating to him. “Might as well get it out of your systems now while we’ve got the time,” he began, rising to his feet. “There won’t be time for this once the mission is under way. If I may impart some wisdom I’ve picked up over the years? When boots are on the ground, you’ve got to set all that aside. You need to be able to count on the people you’re with, and they you.”

“`The image of Lt. Skye fades with a quick salute. In a moment the ship begins to hum with energy. The Giest shutters as it lifts from the space port. It takes only seconds for the warm blue and gold of the coast to give way to the cold blackness of space.

The Journey to Venenum does not take long. You arrive in just a few short minutes. As the Geist slows, you get a look at the planet out of a small window. It is a sickly green and a putrid yellow. You recall from the mission brief that Venenum is a dangerous place, full of toxic creatures, acidic rain, and harsh environment. You hope you prepared well enough.”`

“`The Geist shudders a bit as you hit the atmosphere. Ribbons of flame can be seen through the porthole. The turbulence does not last long.

The Geist lands at the Starport - Site 3373. You catch glimpses of it from above. There cannot be more than several hundred residents. Its barely a shanty town. There are only a few landing pads and only one is large enough to fit the Geist, but barely. A voice comes over the loudspeaker, plainly announcing that you have arrived on Venenum. What would you like to do?”`

Titius descended the gangplank, taking in a deep whispering breath. “Class III and creatures live here. Curious.” Pivoting at the end of the platform, he called over his shoulder “Hope you all brought respirators, because mine is not for sharing.”

“`As you depart the vessel, you see the small walled town. Several Stormtroopers nod to you, awaiting you at the bottom of the ramp. A repulsor dolly with cargo crates full of replacement parts for SITE 921 awaits you.

You look at the town. Not much to look at. The buildings here seem to be made of some form of dark fired glass, ranging from blue to purple in hue. A chemical component in the process makes the bricks opaque, save those locations dedicated for windows. There is a slight glossiness to the buildings. The roofs of the buildings have all been constructed from plasteel or duraplast. In places, old barrels and crates have been repurposed as patches. The soil is a ruddy brown, and flecks of greenish moss appear to grow all over everything. It begins to rain.

Hanging from the gate is a sign, it sways slightly in the wind. The sign, illuminated by three spotlights, tells you its name SITE 3373. Scrawled underneath the official name, another appears - Cad’s Cove. One of the spotlights flickers slightly.”`

As the ragtag group of companions made their way through the town Rohan took special note of the vegetation following Lt. Sykes warning about the plants. While there were various mosses and similar mundane plant life there was nothing that was particularly exotic. Either the land here was inhospitable to sustaining more complicated plants or the population took pains to restrict more invasive species.

While all these complicated thoughts went through his head the only outward expression was a ‘hmph’ as he looked at the pathways.

A wave of damp, humid air wafted into the ship as the loading ramp descended to the ground. His nose curled at the slightly sour smell that filled his nose, and he began to wonder if he should have brought a respirator.

Approaching the bottom of the ramp behind Titius, Ellac looked down at the landing platform as small water droplets began to speckle the ground. “I wonder if this would be the notorious acid rain Lieutenant Skye mentioned,” he said, positioning himself behind his former pupil. “Only one way to find out. HK, go.”

The droid slowly turned its head to stare pointedly at Ellac’s demand. “Objection: Dammit, Master! I am an assassination droid, not a weather rock!”

Ellac looked over his shoulder to meet the droids photoreceptors. “And if you want the chance to assassinate anyone, you’ll go stand in the rain or I’m leaving you on the ship.”

After a moment of careful deliberation, HK-89 slowly proceeded down the ramp and into the rain. “I am going to regret this.”

Elaine rolled her eyes at her older brother’s actions. “I think we should head to the Imperial Administration Office first. Maybe they have some information as to why Site 921 has lost communication,” she said. “That is, unless anyone has anything other suggestions cause I’m open to hearing them.”

Rohan nodded at Elaine’s suggestion and gestured briefly in the direction that the office would be.

You make your way into the small town. As you pass under the gateway, you get a clearer view of the sign. The aurabesh letter, jagged in places have been rounded. The surface of the sign is pockmarked. The guards open the gate for you and you pass into Cad's Cove. People around town wear thick rubber boots and breathing apparatuses. They go about their business and give you little attention. The repulsor cart moves easily though the streets. You make your way a block or two into Cad's Cove and the roar of the Giest engines fill your ears. The layout of the city is simple. You follow the main avenue into the heart of the city. You veer off to the left and make your way to the Imperial Administration building. You're greeted by a young staffer, wearing a black tunic. He has short brown hair and would be considered a Seraph "7" in attractiveness.

“Please, come in. The Empire welcomes all!” He says. “How can the Empire assist…” he pauses seeing Reiden and Rayne. “You…”

“Thank you. I need to see the administator. We need to find our way to Site 921 as soon as possible.” Rayne said to the crewman.

“Yes, ma'am. Right away. If we had known you and the Former Governor were coming we would’ve have prepared a suitable welcoming party. I’ll get the administrator now” He says

he scurries off and a moment later returns with another officer, who has more squares on his rank plaque. He's a middle-aged man, thin and tall. He has a face like a shrew and blonde hair.

“Administrator Hammish Connyl, at your service, ma'am.” He snaps to attention

“To what do we owe the gift of your visit? Are we due for inspection? I assure you this post is shipshape.” He adds

“Its about as shipshape as a derelict Lucrehulk…” Titius mumbled in the background.

“We’re here to find out what happened to Site 921. Have you got any information that can help us?” she spoke in a professional tone to the administrator. Direct, and to the point. She gave Titius a quick warning glance.

“Of course. We don’t have much communication with Site 921. Please, come to my terminal and I’ll provide you with what I can.” He brings you all to the terminal, inserts his code cylinder and brings up the information. “921, here it is. Last communication was over three weeks ago. Odd, They usually contact us weekly. They place orders for resupply and they send a detachment to retrieve it. They take their goods and leave the bodies of those taken by Venenum. A rather gruesome reality of this place, sadly. They get new recruits every 180 cycles. No coordinates here. I’m afraid most of this information is above my classified access.”

“is there anything in particular you are looking for? I will do my utmost to facilitate it.” He adds

Rayne handed him her code cylinder tucked in a pocket with Quaestor authorization.

“Let’s see what we can’t see.” she said.

The terminal whirrs and additional screens open up. You see the mark of the Emperor's Royal Guard. You see Stormtroopers in red armor. You are provided with a location, coordinates of site 921. You are given a truncated list of commanders. You are given a basic layout of the base. There are other files, marked by the seal in the Vizier, which are still restricted. You have enough info to know where to go.

“See if the last transmission from there can be recovered. I want to know what we’re dealing with.” Rayne requested.

“Of course.” He pulls it up.

static...21...relay damage...communc... intermittent. Sending...order....report... seismic activity...paired craft... unable...locate...estimated proximity.... University Research Station.

Ellac raised a brow at the mention of the research station, exchanging a quick glance with HK-89 before he spoke up.

“I’m familiar with the University. The Empire has been conducting studies through them to develop medical resources through the analysis of Venenum’s naturally toxic environment; Everything from treatments and cures to medical and personal protective equipment,” he said, looking up at staffer at the terminal. “But there are rumors that they’ve been developing more than just medicines…”

“In other news, all this admin has made me peckish. Wheres a decent meal in this place?” Titius seemed completely uninterested in the briefing.

“I’m afraid you’ll find the choices here aren’t as cosmopolitan as on Seraph or Ragnath. Your options are The Soggy Gundark and that’s all.” He replies.

Reiden turned to the administrator. “Is there anything else you can think of regarding the situation here that you think may be helpful?”

“My apologies, sir. Without knowing the context of your mission, I’m afraid I cannot be of great tactical assistance. I can offer you my soldiers, if the need arises. I can also offer you transport, it’s not a particularly shiny vehicle, more utilitarian than anything. A speedertruck we use around town for various details. It’s parked outside. If it pleases you, you may take it.” He replies.

“My only other advice is …do not stop on the way to Site 921. Go there directly. It’s dangerous out there ”

Reiden nods, offering a smile. “It’s appreciated, thank you.”

Elaine notices something small flutter by the window, but she didn't get a good look at it

The small silhouette caught Elaine’s attention. She walked over to the window, hoping to see the creature. What was that? Some sort of bird? She thought.

Rohan glanced casually towards the window. Something had gotten Elaine’s attention but on a planet like this everything warranted a bit of attention. Rohan had remained quiet during the discussion as clearly Rayne and Reiden were familiar with the planet and operations.

To his mild surprise the living example of his Father’s ‘tough love’ training program actually knew something useful. Perhaps there was a reason his Father had been investing so much time in training him.

Something on the planet felt off. Whether it was the atmosphere, the frankly depressing living conditions, or the fact that everything on this planet seemed to have evolved to kill them.

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this…” Rohan said, more to himself than anyone in particular. “I think it’s best we get moving. Who knows how long our environmental protections will last and there are people potentially in danger,” Rohan offered in terms of next steps while shooting a glance at Titius and his ill timed suggestion to go to a restaurant.

Elaine turned to Rohan after hearing his concerned comment, becoming quickly distracted when she noticed her brother had formed a sweat on over his brow and his breath became more ragged than usual.

It’s not even that hot in here… She thought. She gave Ellac a look that conveyed a mixture of concern and hatred.

“You seem unwell Ellac. As much as I would like to see you dead, I wish it to be by my hand, not by the planet,” She said bitterly.

Elaine turned to Titius for a moment. “Do you have anything that might be of some use in this situation?” She asked.

Shooting a glare at Elaine, Ellac drew in a deep but hushed breath to regulate his breathing and clear the haziness from his head.

“I have no plans to die today,” he said, turning back to address the Officer. “Connyl, was it? You offered resources. In addition to your troops, we’ll need equipment. Armor, Weapons, Breath Masks, anything that will keep us from being swallowed by the planet.”

“Yes, of course, sir. The breath mask will be easy to come by. Weapons and armor, sir…I cannot distribute those to you. It is against protocol. Since the crackdown on the Hutts, those particular items are strictly monitored. Now the breath mask, easily. I’ll just need you to fill out this requisition form…” He hands over a datapad. “Sign here. Initial, here, here, here, here, here, sign here, initial here, sign here and initial here, then sign on the bottom line.” He points out each spot.

Ellac grit his teeth at the endless list of signatures. After he’d sign one, two more were right below it. Over and over and over again, until he signed on the last line the Administrator had pointed to.

“What’s this bit?” Ellac muttered as he began reading the small numbers beneath his signature. “One of three? What do you mean one of three? I have to do this three times?!” he growled.

Connyl quickly eyes Rayne and Reiden. “Yes, sir. It’s protocol.”

Protocol? For what?! I’m taking a breath mask, you’re not signing over the Empire!” Ellac began to shout. “Just give me the damn pen,” he said, swiping the stylus from his hand as he continued murmuring profanities under his breath. “There. Now… The mask?”

Rohan glanced over Ellac’s shoulder and pointed to a blank spot. “You missed one,” he said. His breathing sounds strangely louder through his helmet filters.

“Protocol ensures order, sir. Order allows the Empire to provide for it’s citizens. We shan’t deviate from protocol, despite being on the edge of the Empire. If anything it’s more important that we stick to it. Now, if you’ll excuse me…I’ll get you the requisitioned mask ” Connyl takes the forms returning a few moments later and passing over a breath mask with goggles

Taking the mask, Ellac secured them over his head, letting them hang loose around his neck. “And I’m sure the Emperor will be delighted to know that there are upstanding Officers such as yourself to enforce it. In fact,” he said, taking a step back to stand at Rohan’s side. “The Emperor’s son himself is here to bear witness to it. And look, he’s even donned Stormtrooper armor to show his dedication to his father’s legacy.” Ellac’s voice was slightly hoarse from ingesting Venenum’s air unfiltered, but his snide tone was as clear as ever.

Rohan shot a look that Ellac couldn’t see through his helmet. If Ellac had been able to see it he’d have known Rohan was thinking about how to rip his remaining ear off.

Reiden watched it all with an amused look on his face. The Empire was certainly well known for its red tape and procedures. He never liked them much himself, but he had to admit Connyl had a point. Still, he was glad that he wasn’t the one filling out forms, having had the foresight to get a mask hooked up to his armor prior to their departure from Seraph. After all, it never hurts to be prepared.

It had been a long time since he was last on Venenum, but his previous visits had been brief, primarily focused on the main buildings where they stood and not venturing further. He wasn’t sure what awaited him on the planet beyond what had already been mentioned to their group so far. At this point he wasn’t ruling anything out; the thought didn’t bring him any comfort. Fortunately, he was certain their group was competent. Certainly they would not have been sent if they weren’t.

“Connyl, thank you so much for taking the time to assist us. I’ll be sure to put in a good word when we return to Seraph. Do you think we could get a copy of those files? Might be good to have them on hand as we look into things here.”

Connyl smiles, he’s excited that a good word might get him out of a bad post. “Of course, my pleasure. Thank you, sir.” He quickly copies the files and passes them over on a small data chip

Meanwhile, across the way

Titius stepped into the establishment, stomach rumbling loudly. Seating himself at what passed for a bar, he released the seals on his helm and set it on his doffed pack. Looking up, he waited for service.

Reiden took the chip and thanked him again, depositing it into a pocket.

Elaine scoffed with a roll of her eyes. “If it weren’t for this mission, Calle would be getting a free snack,” She mumbled quietly.

After a moment of consideration, Elaine decided to head across the street to the restaurant.

She entered the building and made her way over to the bar, taking a seat a couple stools over from Titius.

“`The Soggy Gundark. Quite the name. The cantina itself is less impressive. It’s a relatively large building, you gather quickly that a good majority of the townsfolk could probably fit in here. You look about. The decor is plain, grey and khaki paint, a few posters on the wall read "Join the Empire” and “See something, say something”. The bar itself has several taps and a few bottles of swill. It’s not a high class establishment. There is a small stage and you can see a holographic projector at the base of it.

There are a few people in here. A man in high vis clothing, sat with several other people in the same attire. One is a Rodian, one a Nikto, the other two are human. There is a woman sat at the end of the bar, keeping to herself. She has eyes that seem to stare right through you.

There is a Twi'lek man sitting at a table. A blue skinned male twi’lek, he is tall and very skinny. His face is smudged with grease and oil. He stares longingly into the bottom of his flagon.

There is a woman behind the bar, making notes on a tablet. She’s a tough woman in her mid forties. Her skin is olive and marked with dime sized burns. She has short black hair, shaved down to bald on the side. “`

The woman behind the bar looks up “What’ll it be?” she says vaguely in the direction of Titius and Elaine.

“Do you happen to have any Jawa Juice?” Elaine asked.

“Sure.” She pours Elaine a glass and sets it in front of her. Its a slightly red sandy color.

“Thanks,” she said. She looked into the glass and began to think as the liquid shimmers in the light.

“Cheap, hot, something to wash it down with.” Titius pulled his credit case out.

She doesn’t so much answer as just grunt a reply. She goes to the small cookery, preparing something quick. Some kind of hot fry bread. She ladles a bowl of hot meat stew into a wooden bowl. She brings it back and places it in front of Titius. She pulls out a jug, wrapped in thin grass cord. She pours a cup of glowing blue liquid and passes it over.

“Haven’t seen you before.” she croaks.

“I would surely hope not.” Titius dug into the soup eagerly. “I dont tend to attend Caperion’s bootheel when deployed.”

Rohan exited the office to seek out their ride. He wanted to be ready to go as soon as his companions returned from the cantina. Ellac, taking deep breaths now that he had obtained a rebreather, followed along with him.

The speeder was…functional and that was generous. The thing had clearly been a victim to the environment and looked horrid. But, aside from how it looked on the outside, it would get the job done. Though slowly.

As Rohan continued his inspection he struck up a conversation with Ellac. “So, what is it that my Father sees in you?” he asked, while running a hand along the seem of the speeder’s lights.

“Yet here you are. I know Inquisitor armor when I see it.” She replies.

Titius grunted. “Keeping a gaggle of self-important morons alive on a wild hunt. Have a feeling this would be my last decent meal for a while.” He slurped the last of the stew loudly.

“I see. Enjoy it. If you’re headed out beyond the walls, could be your last ever.” she says, before turning back to her work.

Wanting to get the mission over swiftly, Elaine guzzled down her beverage. “Thanks for the drink,” she said, leaving more than enough credits to pay for the drink on the bar.

“I’m going to catch up to the others. I’ll meet you there.” She said to her comrade before departing from the cantina.

As Elaine leaves the cantina she catches several small animals fluttering around the windows and eaves of the local buildings. They are small, 6 winged creatures. They chirp and chitter.

At the Imperial office, Rayne studied the information on the viewscreen of Site 921. She wanted to know more about this place. More importantly, what happened and why it fell silent. Something wasn’t right and she could quite place what it is. The veteran agent went to work and accessed the Intelligence network, bypassing most authorization to dig deeper into the data, reading between the lines. She scanned over the intel, looking for clues, until she found something very interesting.

The video was buried under several layers of classified information. The feed starts, it's slightly grainy. It shows applicants training in hand to hand combat. You recognize it as a mix of Echani and Imperial techniques. The soldiers are brutal and relentless. The video changes showing a chow hall. The soldiers sit silently eating. The video scrambles again. It shows some other scenes of life at Site 921. The video scrambles and shows what appears to be a meteor crashing in the night sky. The video scrambles again. There is blaster fire in the background, the scene is looking at the ground, it pans up to a bloody stormtrooper helmet. You hear screams and explosions. The video pans, you see a gray-purple blur. It is some kind of creature, large and fast. You can't make it out. The feed pans back to the ground. You hear screaming, closer this time. There is a terrible crunching sound. The stormtroopers helmet rolls into view and stops in the dirt, just at the corner of the view. It is cracked and covered in blood.

This was… disturbing. Rayne had to show the others of her find. She grabbed a copy as well before setting off. The speedertruck was most likely the place to find everyone, if not eventually.

Elaine found the creatures fascinating. She had never quite seen any creatures quite like these ones.

Intrigued by the bug like creatures, she cautiously approached them. What are they? Was this what passed by the window? Are they dangerous? she pondered.

If there was anything that could cause her to forget even just for a moment what she had become, it would be the wildlife on the different planets she had been to. She prepared for the worst but hoped the best.

While Rayne busied herself at the terminal, Reiden had ventured outside. Normally he’d take a moment to enjoy the fresh air and take in the environment, but that would be unwise on Venenum. Instead, he slowly made his way to the speedertruck where Ellac and Rohan had gone before.

“How does it look? Will it get the job done?” he asked them as he approached.

A loud hiss sounded behind, scattering the creatures.

“Right, Im guessing that is our ride.”

Elaine sighed in disappointment then turned to Titius. “It would appear so.”

“Well then…get a move on, youre in my way.” A gesture of impatience came from Titius.

She rolled her eyes and reluctantly moved to the side and started walking towards the speedertruck where most of her comrades had gone.

“Yes,” Rohan said, not understanding the look from Reiden who was used to a Lap'lamiz giving a far wordier response to queries. He took a moment to point out the cosmetic damage before stepping inside and activating the speedertruck.

The engine rumbled for a moment before finally turning over. Rohan poked his head out. “Who’s driving?”

Rayne saw the speedertruck parked and headed towards it. It looked like everyone was assembled there.

“Before we head out, take a look at this. I was able to recover some security footage from Site 921.” she handed her datapad over to show the rest of the group.

“What was it that struck the surface?” Rohan asked.

“Don’t know. That’s all that was recovered. We’ll find out when we get there, but it looks like we’re in for a fight one way or another.” Rayne replied simply.

“`You make your way out of Cad’s Cove. Following the information furnished by Administrator Connyl, You have headed east towards Site 921. You pass by the glass bricked buildings, groups of miners and hunters coming in or going out into the wilds of Venenum. You pass through the East gate and into the open. As you leave the relative safety of the settlement, the rain begins to pick up. You shelter yourselves as best as possible, but this is looking like it will be a long drive. There is a road, or at least something that could vaguely be described as a road.

You travel for a while over mostly flat land. It is a sea of sickly greens and yellow, dotted with flashes of color. The terrain is harsh, jagged rocks and pools of unknown liquids dot the area. Several kilometers outside of town, the relative openness and flatness of the land changes. You soon find yourself deep within an alien jungle. There is little trace of what remains of the road. You’re overlanding now. Following the coordinates towards site 921.

Your pace slows as you have to move between large grass like plants that block the straight path.. The monocot “trees” are tall, providing at least some shelter from the rain. They all have thick waxy leaves. Colors range from teal, to deep green, to purple and even shades of red.

Bright flashes of color appear off the path, deeper into the forest. There is something haunting and almost dreamlike about this place. You hear no sounds other than the whirr of the repulsor craft and the pattering of rain. Ahead, it appears as though two large boulders have fallen into the road. What would you like to do?”`

“`You are comfortably sitting in the truck. Rohan’s observation that this appears to be a trap feels correct, but only partly. You pause. It is silent.

After a moment a spray of dirt and rocks crashes against the truck’s windscreen. You see the creature for a moment. It has pallid khaki skin. Its tube shaped body wriggles and writhes. The impact against the truck jostles you slightly.

It disappears again in a flash. It leaves behind a trail of viscous mucus where it rubbed against the truck.

A moment later there is an impact from the other side. The creature batters the speeder truck. You are being attacked. What would you like to do?”`

Alarmed by Rohan’s sudden alert, Elaine quickly stood up.

“Somebody get those boulders out of the way, I’ll hold off these disgusting slugs the best I can!” Elaine exclaimed as she extended her arms towards the two creatures.

She closed her eyes to focus better, she couldn’t quite control them as well as she wanted, however, she was able to keep them from thinking that they were a snack which was good enough for her.

The Firrerreo focused her mind. Rayne heard Elaine’s command. It made her quite proud of the little Sith. Elaine was right, the boulder ahead of us needed to be moved, but there was more here. Rayne could sense it. These ground slugs couldn’t be seen… because they were hiding… underground… four of them directly ahead, two behind us, and the two Elaine has wrangled.

Rayne quickly reached out, using her adept powers of telekinesis, she pulled violently with the Force. Three grotesque worms came screeching out of the ground in front of them, suspended in mid-air, writhing and struggling to get free. The fourth creature managed to slip past her initial grip. She held on tightly to the ones she had.

“Can’t hide now,” Rayne said.

Reiden quickly took an assessment of their situation. The boulders blocking their path would be a problem. The slug-like creatures were another one. He opted for the creatures. If they didn’t deal with them, the boulders wouldn’t matter. Luckily there were enough members of their team that they should be able to cover each other’s backs and take care of both obstacles before continuing on with their mission.

He leapt from the speedertruck and pulled his lightsaber from its spot on his belt, thumbing the activation stud. The viridian blade crackled to life. He delved into the flow of the Force and took hold of it, hurling his lightsaber at the slugs that Rayne had suspended in midair, guiding its path. The blade cleaved through one of them, carving it in two. Not wanting to risk being without a weapon with so many of the creatures around, he recalled it to his outstretched hand and assumed a defensive stance. His eyes darted around, wary of the danger they found themselves in.

“HK, take them out!” Ellac shouted, gesturing to the slugs outside the truck as he readied himself to leap into the action.

Immediately, the droid was at his side, firing down one of the creatures. Bolts of red plasma seared into the wormy flesh of the beast, invoking a shrill cry from it as it quickly buried itself back into the dirt beneath them.

“Really? You paid how much for that droid and it can’t make a killshot?”

Titius poked his head out of the vehicle, rolling out a hidden strip of explosives from his armour. “Hey knucklehead, can you handle a worm and a push at the same time?”

Noone in the speeder had to guess whom Titius was addressing.

*“I train you up only for you to insult me. Give me the explosive.” *

Titius rapidly assembled a roughshod assembly of explosives. “Not my best work but itll do. Bombs away!” Holding it out, Titius mimed plugging his ears with the other.

Rohan, struggling with his armor finally extracted himself from the speedertruck. “Get rid of that!l” he screamed at Ellac, recognizing the makeshift explosive device.

Turning towards the boulders obstructing their path a worm charged at him. Throwing out his arms the worm flew backwards. As it connected with the boulders with a sickening splat Rohan cocked his head. “Those boulders are really stuck in there,” he muttered.

“Way to go Ellac!” Elaine said sarcastically, giving a glare to her brother.

She was still preoccupied with the one she was controlling but she could still sense the one that crawled back into its nasty hole.

As she tried to find the repulsive creature, she could sense two more that were vaguely close to them somewhere but she couldn’t make out where.

Elaine reached out her available hand towards the hole, pulling up the one that Ellac’s HK unit had previously hit.

The creature was in too much disarray to be controlled again by Elaine. She decided to hold the creature suspended in the air.

Only one slug still caught in her vice through the Force. With an effort of will, Rayne clenched her fist suddenly, tightening her grip to strangulate the creature. It writhed horribly as the life within it faded until it went limp. She then hurled the remains against the stone.

Reiden pivoted in place. There were two slugs left that he could see, one on either side of the speedertruck. Elaine had one suspended in the air, its body wriggling and writhing. Clearly, it wasn’t very happy about its current predicament.

A perfect opportunity to put it out of its misery, he thought to himself.

Readying himself, he quickly moved to where she was and plunged the viridian blade of his saber into the pale flesh of the slug. Smoke curled from the creature’s body as the plasma blade seared through and the creature fell to the ground with a dull splat. The stench of burnt flesh reached his nose, causing him to grimace slightly. Neither the creature’s appearance nor smell was very appetizing, he had to admit.

“Karabast, that’s awful.”

Stepping toward Rohan, Ellac made a point to stand over him as he glared down at the boy, tossing the bomb toward the boulders without breaking eye contact.

The explosive thumped onto the ground at the base of the rocks blocking their paths, erupting with a thunderous rumble that managed to crack the boulders, but not destroy them.

Rohan stared back at Ellac, unimpressed given the underwhelming impact left by the explosive device that had been thrown. Rohan chuckled softly given nothing had changed except for the loudness of the explosion.

A loud exhale exhausted from Titius’ helm. “Guess I have to do everything myself.”

Hopping down from the transport, he sautered over to the rocks. Reaching the obstruction, he clambered up, dropped several items into the crack in the stone before descending with a line in hand.

Turning away, Titius gave a cheeky wave to the group as a wall of dust roiled out from the rocks, puntuated by a large boom.

Rohan’s ears rung. Titius had failed to give warning before setting off the explosives.

Rohan felt the familiar wave of nausea that meant he probably had a concussion.

Stay focused. They’re still more out there, he forced himself to concentrate. He got a vague sense of where the remaining two worms were. He stumbled over and tried to focus his strength as he pounded his fist into the ground to force a wave of destructive energy towards the worms.

Elaine let out a deep huff. “Screw this,” she said to herself, taking her blaster out of the holster that rests on her hip.

She aimed the blaster at the worm under her control and fired off the searing red bolt, killing the creature.

“Much better,” she spoke to herself once again.

Rayne gave a low growl in her throat like a predator. Her eyes swirled with fire and focused ahead at the boulders blocking their path ahead. With a surge of Dark Side energy, she was able to grip both pieces with the Force and violently pulled them apart. The rocks, although large, rolled and tumbled with ease until they came to a rest off in the grass, freeing the path towards their destination.

“We’re clear! Everybody onboard! Drive on, quickly,” she spoke to Rohan.

“Yes ma’am,” Rohan snapped to attention as he scrambled back into the speeder truck, motioning at the others to get in as he turned the disgruntled motor over.

Reiden grinned when he saw the boulders no longer blocking their path. He clipped his lightsaber back to his belt and gave an appreciative nod to Titius as he turned to get back on the speedertruck. He sat down once more and slowly let out a breath.

“I’d been hoping to get in on some action again, but I didn’t expect that here of all places, not this mission. Very interesting. Although something tells me this is only the beginning.”

“`The remainder of your journey goes uninterrupted. As you ventured farther from Cad’s Cove, the landscape gave way to a wild alien environment. Dense plantlife and fungal spores appear to cover most of the planet’s surface. Following the coordinates, you make your way up into a remote mountain range. This area of the planet is extremely remote. The file you were given has a map of the immediate area.

You make your was towards the area indicated as SITE 921. The facility itself is built into a mountain. Only a small exterior mustering area is outside. There are an array of barricades and defensive structures. All appears quiet at this time. What would you like to do?”`

Rohan slowed as they approached SITE 921. The place seemed deserted. He noticed a small loading dock and maneuvered the speedertruck to come to a rest near it.

Rohan exited the speeder truck and moved to the door. He took a look at a nearby access panel and attempted the open command.

Taking a step back he stared at the door, awaiting a reaction. After a few moments he turned back towards his companions.

“I guess it’s locked,” he said.

You sense life inside the base and death outside. As the force calls to Reiden, his eyes take in the surroundings. The muster yard, the small central area, has been set with cargo containers in a chevron pattern, the point facing outwards. You notice the XX-10 Turbolaser towers, their barrels are scorched and displaying the rainbow coloration of heat tempered durasteel. You don't see bodies around, defenders or attackers. Your heart reaches to the lifeforms within. They are cold, hardened, brutal.

Rohan, with the secrecy of a teenager, pulled up some information on his wrist links. After a moment, he positioned his body to block the keypad as he punched in a string of commands. With a hiss the door opened.

“Sorry, my mistake. It’s unlocked,” Rohan said.

As Reiden looked at their surroundings, he let the Force flow over him and he reached out with his mind, searching for something, anything. And he found it. People were inside the building, their resolve was clear even from a distance. Coupled with the state of the area around them and the weaponry, they had been defending themselves from something.

Does everything on this planet want to kill you? he mused to himself.

He spotted Rohan at the door again and saw it open. The boy wouldn’t be fooling anyone with an act like that. But he let him have his secrets; so long as they didn’t get in the way of their mission, it didn’t matter much to him. Although he still thought this was neither the place nor the mission for a child, regardless of who his father was.

“Hey, don’t just go running inside. Stop for a moment,” he called to Rohan. “They’ve clearly been through a fight of some kind, and we don’t know what. They’re in there and may be on the defensive, waiting to lash out at anyone or anything that enters. At least let them know who we are and that we’re here to check in.”

“I never said I was going in there alone. I just opened the door,” Rohan explained. Having taken the rebuff from the elder personally.

“Look, it’s not personal,” Reiden started, letting out a sigh. “I’ve just seen too many people rush into things without thinking before. A lot of otherwise good men that never made it home at the end of the day. Many of them were young, although still a little older than you. I can’t always afford to assume people are going to know what they’re doing or will do things the right way. But as long as we all make it back after this, that’s what matters.”

Something in Reiden’s mind rang out in warning. He’d learned long ago to trust in that feeling over the years. He turned to the others quickly. “Everyone get down and find cover, we’ve got incoming!” He threw himself at Rohan, taking the boy down with him, pulling him behind a nearby crate. “We’re an Imperial party from Seraph!” he called out to the people rushing towards the open doorway, hoping they would hear him - and that they would actually listen to his words.

“I wouldn’t mind if Ellac didn’t make it back.” Elaine mumbled quietly to herself.

Ten stormtroopers appear from Dark corners of the corridors within the base. They're dirty, but beneath the filth you can see that their Armor is bright red. This is the iconic design of the Praetorian Regiment. They have F-11D blaster carbines pointed at you. There is a tension in the air. One steps forward, and backs the others down. As he approaches, he cautiously looks out the door.

“PT-519 at your service. I must request you enter so we can secure the outpost.” He says, his voice is modulated.

Rohan grunted and pushed the Elder off him. Not that he was t grateful that he’d been spared a pretty horrific fate. He just didn’t like to be touched.

“Those are the Larvae. I think it’s best if I give you a full debrief. Let’s head up to the command center and I’ll bring you up to speed. You didn’t happen to have replacement parts for our transmitter, did you?” The soldier asks

“Yes,” Rohan said, gesturing back towards the Speedertruck.

“Superlative.” He says, turning to two troopers behind him. “1313 and 1247, retrieve the cargo. 1723 and Aurek, cover them. Close and secure Site-921 upon retrieval.” He turns back to the rest of you. “Please. This way.”

He let out a laugh. “You know, I was afraid you’d tell me that was a baby. Can’t say I’m too surprised though.” He gave the troopers a nod and stepped into the facility.

He gestures towards a small turbolift

Rohan led the way towards the turbolift.

Elaine exited the speedertruck and followed the lead of Reiden and Rohan.

Titius followed the cargo off and into the entrance. Once in, he popped smartly around to stand vigil as the outer doors closed. “Lets leave the outside where it belongs.”

“Seems like this place is a good assignment to keep you on your toes,” Reiden said, turning to the trooper. “How long have you been stationed here?”

Once you all have cleared the building, the team of Praetorians scan the exterior of the facility. They are efficient and in a matter of moments, they have the cargo brought inside. They seal the door behind them.

“I was commissioned to Venenum as an instructor. I’ve been on station for 687 standard days.” he says

You all enter the turbolift and after a short ride, you arrive at the command level. The soldier leads you into the heart of the command post and brings you to a holotable

“Are any of you familiar with the purpose of Site-921?” He asked, before removing his helmet. He sets his helmet on the table. He’s an older man, a large scar crosses his left eye from cheek to forehead. The scar creates an artificial part in his blonde crew cut hair.

“Some of the published research from this facility has piqued my interest on multiple occasions. Anything I could peruse while we are visiting?” Titius became quite animated at the prospect.

“My father neglected to give the specifics,” Rohan responded.

“Supposedly a training facility, if I recall,” Reiden said after a moment of thought. “It’s been a while since I first heard about it and a lot has happened since then, so the details are hazy. Couldn’t help but wonder if I ever got the full story, truth be told.”

“This is where we train our Praetorian Regiment for the Clan,” Rayne said plainly. She was able to determine the site’s purpose through her sleuthing of the file at the Administration’s office.

“A special ops training program for specific high risk missions. And most who enter here leave in a body bag,” she continued, knowing how rigorous the training they put the candidates through here was.

“That’s correct. Venenum is a place where only the strong survive. That is why we train here. Praetorian Regiment takes only the best of the best, Venenum just happens to do most of the sorting for us…I’m afraid this isn’t a research station. You must be thinking of the Imperial Academy’s Flora and Fauna Research station…though we haven’t had contact with them for some time, I suspect they’re experiencing the same troubles we are.” The Captain clicks on the holotable.

“Sixteen days ago we made first contact with the Larvae. Those are the worm-like creatures you encountered on the road. They’re relatively easy to dispatch. Fourteen days ago we encountered the first of the juveniles. They’re hungry bastards and they gave no warning of attack.”

An image of a juvenile creature appears on screen.

“They got 10 recruits the first night. They’ve been striking again at random since them. Seems every other or every few days…and we’re due for another attack. Our first order of business is going to be getting our communication relay back up and running, but maybe a skilled team like yours can find the source of these things and eliminate them. Just let me know how I can help…I’ll do whatever I can.”

“What has been proven effective against these creatures so far? No point in wasting resources if theres a known plan.”

“The fact these are juveniles implies there’s a mother somewhere. Did your men disturb a nest?” Rohan asked.

“Pump enough blaster bolts into them and they go down. They’re tough though. And fast, too fast for the Turbolazers to track effectively. We can land close shots, which seems to be enough. One blast from that tends to do it, but our carbines dont have that kind of energy output so it takes a few more. It you can get them in their mouths, one shot usually does it.”

He flicks a button on the table and it shows a meteor burning up in atmosphere. “We suspect that this object is what ruffled them up. Came down the night before the first attack. Same day we lost communication with Cad’s Cove and the Research facility, ironically. We estimate it made impact on the far side of the valley. We haven’t been able to repel the attacks for long enough to mount recon patrols or a counteroffensive.”

“Any danger to a flyby?”

“This facility is not outfitted with any aerial units. I’ll spare you the lectures about Praetorian doctrine. Aside from that, with the projected increase in storm intensity…a TIE wouldn’t last long out there anyhow. And you’d need a maniac pilot…” PT-519 says

As Reiden took in the information, his brain was already at work mulling it over, searching for some kind of solution to the problem. A soft whirring sounded behind him. An idea began to take shape. “You’ve been here. You know more about the terrain and environment than we do, and what the weather is like. If not a TIE, what about something smaller, like a droid?” he asked, pointing his thumb behind his shoulder to indicate his droid, Blitz. “This guy’s fast as a speeder, even has a blaster if needed. Would some aerial recon help, or is this more of a boots on the ground type of situation? Or would the incoming storm cause problems no matter the approach taken?”

“Well, any tactical information it could gather would certainly be helpful in establishing what we’re looking at out there. Perhaps it could do a quick reconnoiter of the valley and give us some information. It might take some time for a complete sweep, but it’d be worth it for the Intel.” He scratches his chin. “We’ll need to inspect where the meteor landed and we ought to check on the University Research station too. Once we get informed, we can decide on action. When that time comes, we’ll be on foot.”

He nodded. “That’s true. Let’s send him out for a full sweep of the area, learn as much as we can before heading out. Experience has taught me it can make a world of difference when going into an unknown situation, especially one on unfamiliar ground.” Turning, he gave the droid an appreciative pat. “Okay Blitz, this is the area we need info on,” he pointed to the map that was displayed. “Think you can scan it for us and come back?”

The Ascendant Drone beeped and whistled, hovering up and down slightly, almost as if nodding. Then it turned and sped down the hall, heading to where it would exit the facility.

“Is there any other info you can share with us that may be of use, Captain?”

“How long will this take,” Rohan asked before adding ‘Sir’ to his question.

“I estimate we have about 12 hours before the droid returns. This valley is quite large. In the mean time, I suggest you all get some rest. We’re overdue for another attack and it’s best to be fresh should they attack.” PT-519 says.

“Would you be willing to show me your training facilities here? I’m curious about the Praetorians,” Rohan asked, ignoring the clear and useful advice to get some rest.

He turns to Rohan. “How old are you, son?”

“Old enough,” he snapped back, perhaps more snippish than he intended.

“Then you’re old enough to die here. You want to see our training facilities so badly… very well.” The Captain turns to a Sergeant. “PT-601…please show this young man to the training facilities.”

“Aye, sir.” The soldier replies. “This way.” He gestures with his rifle

Rohan, suppressing a sudden pang of doubt, followed the soldier.

Reiden raised an eyebrow at the exchange, rubbing his chin as if in thought to hide a small smirk that had formed. Well that will be an interesting lesson for the boy to learn.

As Rohan is lead through the outpost, he realizes how spartan this place is. There are rooms which are locked, but he does pass a barracks. The beds have no sheets and are just flat pieces of metal. They almost resemble terrible prison cells. There doesn't appear to be any recreational activity space. You pass a medbay, that is equally austere. Eventually Rohan is lead to a door.

“Training is through there.” The soldier says.

“It doesn’t look like there’s much to do here but train,” Rohan said, heading through the door.

Rohan looks up and sees he is now outdoors. The door shuts behind him.

“Hey!” Rohan shouted, turning to check the door.

The door is locked

Rohan does not sense any worms. Wait what was that, did the ground shake? Is that a worm? Oh God, there might be worms.

“Fine, if you want to see what I can do. I can do that,” Rohan said, defiantly as he drew and ignited his emerald lightsaber and prepared for whatever the planet was gonna throw at him.

After observing the interaction between Rohan and PT-519, Elaine walks up to the trooper. “Do you know of any other creatures that threaten this site?” She asked.

Blitz began his surveillance of the region, letting out a low whistle. Before long his sensor had picked something up. Flying a bit lower to get a better look, he found what appeared to be an old camp. The droid made a note of it. It wasn’t his mission to investigate, after all, only gather information and present it when he had finished. Climbing in altitude once more, he continued on.

“Most of the wildlife tends to stay away from the outpost. The Flora on the other hand can be quite troubling. As far as animals go, the only ones that give us any real trouble are the Carcharodiles. They love to chew up the wires on the com relay…”

He taps the table and shows you a Carcharodile in holographic form

It’s kind of cute She thought, maintaining a neutral expression. “Do they come around often?”

“More often than we’d care to see them. Nasty little things, sharp teeth and a vice grip.” He says.

“I see. Perhaps if we are around and they come back, I may be able to step in for you. Unfortunately I am unable to make any such promises though.” She replied

“No, you’ve got the right idea, Elaine. If there’s anything we can do to help, please let us know, Captain.”

Elaine gave Reiden and appreciative nod.

“If any of you are useful with circuits, we could use some help getting comms back up.” He says

Rohan, fighting the shock of being thrust out into the open, scanned the area. His heart pounded in his chest as seconds dragged on like hours.

Nothing happened.

“Poodoo’s,” he muttered as he turned and tried the security code he had received from his father to unlock the door.

the door opens. The sergeant stands there waiting.

Rohan silently stares at the sergeant though wisely kept his saber lowered.

Rohan seethed and then struck. Launching himself to headbutt the Sgt. For a moment it looked like it would hit but the seasoning of the Praetorian allowed him to pull back his head a fraction of a second before impact.

With the fluid motion of a trained killer the Sgt brought a right hook to bare against Rohan. Rohan was able to roll with the punch, backing up a couple steps, and only taking a grazing hit to the head.

The Sergeant shoves Rohan. “That’s enough, boy. Go back to your companions.”

Rohan stood his ground. “What’s your problem.”

The Sergeant didn’t dignify Rohan with a verbal response. His answer was a physical one that the boy would not soon forget. In one fluid motion the soldier delivered a crippling strike to Rohan’s diaphragm. All the air left his lungs with a wheeze. Rohan doubles over. The soldier’s elbow comes down on Rohan’s head. Despite wearing a helmet, the strike was true. Blackness. Rohan collapses to the floor.

Now unconscious, the Sergeant picks the boy up and brings him to the medical officer. He drops Rohan on the gurney like a sack of potatoes.

“Patch him up. Hopefully all that’s permanently injured is his pride.” he says.

Two guards are issued posts outside the med bay.

Having known Rohan’s departure may have resulted in a harsh lesson being learned, Reiden had left the briefing room to follow the pair. Though he missed whatever had happened, he caught up in time to see Rohan being loaded onto a gurney. A brief flash of worry came over him before he realized that the Praetorian wasn’t likely to kill the boy, no matter how much Rohan needed to be taught a lesson or how much the soldier may have been tempted to. He could only guess at what had transpired, but he hoped it was what Rohan needed. He shot the sergeant a sympathetic look and gave him a nod after hearing him issue orders to have Rohan sent to get checked out.

Time heals all wounds. Rohan's wounds were healed in almost exactly 12 hours. Though his pride may take longer to fully heal. Reidens drone has returned. It is full of information. You take some time to dissect all the Intel.

Rohan stood around the table of various maps and images taken from Reiden’s droid. His head was still dizzy from the altercation earlier and he couldn’t make heads nor tails of the maps.

“Which of these is closer to where we are now?”

“Judging by the drones telemetry data, it would appear that the research camp is closest. Not uncommon for the researcher to venture out beyond the protection of their station.” PT-519 says

“Well what are we waiting for, Hoth to warm over? Lets go exploring! And I wouldn’t mind taking a look at what they’re researching over there.” Titius became eerily animated at the mentioned research station.

Reiden mulled over all the information. His droid had proven invaluable in his task, making him glad to have brought him along. Of course, the research camp should be checked out. They needed to know the fate of the people stationed there, one way or the other. That was a given, at least in his mind. Then there was the matter of whatever work had been conducted there. But the piece foremost in his mind was the crater. He wanted to know more, his curious nature practically begged it. But he pushed that thought to the back of his mind, turning to the captain.

“What can you tell us about that camp? Any idea what was being done there, anything that needs to be contained or destroyed? We should check it out regardless, but it would be helpful to know what we may be walking into.”

“Perhaps there’s better transportation than that speeder truck that got us here,” Rohan added.

“Have you considered your own legs? Seems like your level of thinking.”

Rohan glared at Titius but didn’t rise to the bait of someone who’s latest contribution was to scorch some rocks.

“Indeed it might be worth investigating. Afraid I don’t know much about the camp. Looks like a research team was dispatched to that location. They often collect samples for genetic cataloguing. I’d suspect anything you find there will lead you back to the University Research post. Now that we have the parts we need, we can get this facility back in contact with the Legion and get additional support in fortifying this position before we launch extermination missions. In the mean time, I’m not certain what your plan is, but I’ll urge you to be cautious out there. I can offer little support at this time.” The Captain says.

“My recommendation is to take the speedertruck you brought and head that way. It’ll be a decent trek out there, but the speeder will cut that time significantly. Stick to the open paths and don’t venture too far into the brush. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have matters that need attending to here.” The Captain salutes and goes about his duties.

You spend some time preparing yourselves and the truck for the journey. The Praetorian were able to spare an E-Web heavy repeater and they have found a way to mount it to the truck. At least you'll have some added defense capability...you all climb aboard the truck and begin heading south west towards the known location of the Research Station. It's a tough drive and at time your progress seems to slow to a crawl, but then you get moving again and seem to make up the ground. Is there anything you'd like to do while on this sortie?

The speeder engines whined as it trundled along the ground. Titius was on a swivel, watching for any fauna that got untoward ideas about a meal. Even the flora seemed oppressive along the path. “Well they certainly picked the right environment to train the Praetorians.” the merc mused. Tapping the hull, he bemoaned into the vehicle. “Can’t this thing go any faster? I feel like I could have walked!”

“For once I actually agree with the grenade happy freak. Is there anything you can do Rohan?”

Rohan accelerated the lumbering speeder truck. It wasn’t much but it was slightly faster.

The captain had told them it would be rough terrain, so Reiden had thought he would be prepared for the journey they would have. He was wrong. The path was bumpy and uneven, which made him glad for the repulsors the vehicle possessed. But that wasn’t what got to him. It was the speed. Some moments passed more quickly while others felt interminably long. Worse still was the monotony of it. Forest everywhere. Had they been on another world, perhaps he would have called it beautiful and a refreshing change from the city life in which he always found himself. But between the hazardous environment and unknown creatures that could emerge at any given moment, he had no time to appreciate it, not that it was the right time for that anyway. They had a job to do. He was grateful when Rohan managed to coax more speed out of the vehicle. As far as Reiden was concerned, the sooner they arrived at the research facility, the better. Still, he remained on edge just in case, his senses alert.

You arrive at the Imperial Institute: Native Fauna Research Post. From the outside, you can clearly see that this is not a military outpost. Unlike Site 921, there are no turbolaser emplacements. The modest outpost appears to be modular in nature, small subunits have all been attached together to form the footprint of the base. The perimeter is surrounded by a power fence, narrow beams of laser appear to keep this place relatively safe. You can see through to the other side of the fense, there are various holes and blaster marks upon the walls of the facility. An uneasy stillness lingers in the air. What would you like to do?

Rayne felt through the Force, seraching for any signs of life in the facility ahead. Lifeforms fluttered from the earth inside. They seemed to be reappearing underground and back to the surface. Well that’s a challenge, she mused to herself.

“Alright. I can sense what’s inside ahead. Ten, maybe twelve more of our friends.” the Firrerreo woman spoke after a slight pause to the others around her, an inaudible purr of anticipation of the battle ahead followed. Barely a whisper of silver stripes of a tiger swirled beneath her skin noticeably.

“What are we waiting for?” Rohan said, turning around in the driver seat. “If they’re hurt we need to get to them.”

“Nothing on this putrid rock is a friend. But lead on if youre so eager to die, buckethead.” Titius sat back in the turret, clearly in no rush to render aid.

“Fine,” Rohan said, unstrapping himself from the seat.

Rohan pushed the man out of his way as he climbed out of the speeder truck. He hesitated a moment when his foot touched the ground. His spirits rose when he wasn’t immediately attacked by any of those ground worms and he strolled confidently over to the fence.

Rohan’s head snapped to the side. Something was coming. He didn’t sense any danger as he stepped to the side and a small lizard went darting past him.

“Hey, if you can hear me. Open the gate,” Rohan shouted.

“Did anyone grab a key before we left?” Rohan asked his companions as he walked back to the speeder truck.

“I have a skeleton key but somehow I feel you’ll object.” The disdain was heavy.

While Rohan’s face was covered by his helmet he was staring daggers at Titius as he realized what the man was implying.

Rohan got a mischievous glint in his eye as he stared at Titius. He put forth his arms and visualized grabbing the man.

Titius struggled as his felt his feet leave the ground. Rohan, smirking like his old man, turned and propelled the man through the air and over the laser gate.

“See if you can unlock the gate from over there,” Rohan said.

“hey…HEY…what the hell do you think youre doi…” the protests were lost in the rushing wind of the mercenary flying over the laser wall.

“You’re fine. Check the gate for a latch or something.”

With impeccable comedic timing, the crunch of dropped armor sounded as Titius went scorpion into the dirt on the other side of the laser gate.

Reiden watched as Rohan unceremoniously launched Titius up and over the fence. He did his best to suppress a laugh at the unexpected sight. With a brief shake of his head, he dismounted from the speedertruck and sized up the fence. It didn’t seem too tall and he had made higher leaps before.

On the other hand, it didn’t hurt to be cautious. Reiden gathered the Force to him and directed it to his legs, making a short run before leaping into the air. He cleared the fence and then dropped to the ground on the other side, knees bent slightly from the impact.

“Let’s get a move on. We’ve got an objective to see to,” he called to the others as he turned back toward the fence.

“Don’t forget to unlock the fence,” Rohan said. Despite having the fleeting insight of hurling Titius over the wall it hadn’t yet dawned on him that he could jump over as well.

“No can do, child.” Rayne said, emerging from the truck. She smirked mischievously and reached out with the Force, using her adept powers of telekinesis. She grabbed the son of Lap'lamiz and tossed him out of the truck and upward into the sky. The sound of shriek was all that was heard.

The Firrerreo walked up closer to the gate barring their entrance to the building ahead. Using the Force once again to enhance her jump, she easily floated over the fence with ease, landing softly.

At that moment, Rohan came ever closer to the ground below. His fear and shock was palpable to those who could feel it. Rayne turned and grabbed him with the Force once more, stopping his fall before he hit terminal velocity, letting him scramble to his feet. She needed everyone to be at their best for their fight ahead. She was, however, savoring the bit of chaos she was able to conjure up.

“That wasn’t funny,” Rohan said, fighting back tears. Apparently he couldn’t handle what he was serving when caught off-guard.

“Oh get over yourself, spoiled prince.” Titius hauled himself upright, scrubbing the dirt off his visor.

This time, Reiden couldn’t stop a chuckle from escaping. “Come on, Rohan, it was a little funny. Besides, what did you expect after you threw Titius over and then wanted to wait for us to open the door?”

Rohan dusted himself off. “I’m not a prince. My Dad was the son of a Duchess and my sister thinks herself one. Not me,” Rohan seethed. He did not think it was funny.

Blast I really want to push Ellac into that beam she thought with a sigh escaping her mouth as she followed suit of her comrades, leaping over the fence with the help of The Force.

Ellac joins you all in a quick leap over the fence. You all move forward and find the Imperial Research post. It is a modest building made of duracrete. Outside there are several planter boxes, a "Test Garden", the plants writhe and move as you pass by. You see the scorch marks of several light blaster strikes around the place. You move towards the door to enter the facility. Would you like to do anything before you go inside?

Rohan looked at the blaster strikes, tilting his head. He slowly pivoted on his foot to look outward from the Research post. There didn’t appear to be any signs of return fire. No scorch marks on the laser gate or the surrounding area.

“Whoever was…or is…here didn’t put up a fight,” Rohan said.

Rohan went to look at the door. It didn’t appear to be breached by force and he didn’t sense anything…humanoid inside. “Looks like we’re going to need to go inside,” Rohan said, gently pushing open the door while holding his lightsaber. Ready to ignite it if needed.

Reiden looked around him, noting the scoring from blaster fire. He found himself agreeing with Rohan’s assessment of the situation. Still, it didn’t make him feel any better about it all. The fact that communication was lost at all was bad enough. That there wasn’t much fighting back was worrisome as well and left him with a feeling of unease that he couldn’t quite shake. “Let’s see if we can find out just what happened here. Either way, we need to report back what we’ve found and try to get things working again.”

You peer through the door and down the corridor. There is a bloody handprint on one of the walls. As you move inside the building, it opens to a large atrium. At the center is a statue of a cloaked Palpatine. In the floor there are 3 holes. What would you like to do?

As you prepare to enter the Facility a squelching shriek comes over your communicators. It is the Imperial Officer aboard the Geist. The communication is spotty at first, but becomes clear after a moment.

“Away team, Geist Actual, come in. Away team…got you. Team, prepare for immediate extraction. Communication has been re-established at Site 921 and we have been appraised of the situation. Fleet command has issued an immediate withdrawal from your location. There is a clearing, two clicks south. It’s large enough to bring the Giest down, we’ll meet you for exfil. We’ll fill you in on the updated intel once you’re one board.” Skye says.

You all decide for the better to leave this place and follow he command. You make your way through the fence once again and back to the speeder. You go to the clearing just as the Geist lands. You climb aboard and await debrief.

Skye joins you after some time. “Welcome back. I apologize for the immediate removal from this mission. I’m sure you all wanted to get to the bottom of the attacks. Unfortunately, it seems that the ISB has already gotten to the bottom of it. The life forms that you ran into are a native species which has been dormant for many years. There was a refugee vessel that crashed, all souls were lost, that awakened them. These creatures have a short lifespan and fortunately, due to the early awakening none of them could reach breeding maturity before perishing.”

She sighs and takes a very deep breath.

“It was necessary to pull you out immediately. The orders came direct from the new Emperor…” She looks at you all. “To some of you, this will come as a shock, to others…well…I’ll leave you to your own judgement. This mission was orchestrated under the authority of the Vizier. The Emperor’s first decree was to dissolve the Vizier position, thus this mission would be operating illegally. Accordingly, We thought it best to pull you out.”. Skye clasps her hands together and raises her chin. “Site 921 has been reinforced with two companies from the Stormtrooper legion. They will hunt down and clear the remaining creatures. So, do not worry about the troopers there. Good work, you accomplished the primary mission objective.”
